How do I remove rust?
Rust occurs when steel and its component iron react with moisture and oxygen. Even small rust spots can quickly cause major damage, especially in workshops, industry, automotive technology and outdoor environments. Therefore, a systematic approach is essential: first remove the rust, then protect the surface to prevent further corrosion.
This not only extends the lifespan of components and surfaces but also reduces maintenance and repair costs.
Rust removal: the foundation for every further treatment
Before metal surfaces can be permanently protected, any existing rust must be reliably removed or neutralised. Rust, deposits and corrosion residues not only impair the appearance, but also the function and durability or service life of materials and material surfaces. In addition, rust hinders the adhesion of subsequent protective coatings.
Depending on the application, different approaches are suitable: liquid rust removers and gels are ideal for thoroughly treating corroded surfaces, while rust loosener and rust shock products can free seized fasteners, joints and connections. In areas where rust cannot be completely removed mechanically, a rust converter can be a useful addition to neutralise and prepare the surface for further treatment.

Protect treated surfaces
Once the rust has been removed, the metal surface needs prompt and effective protection against renewed corrosion. WEICON offers a range of solutions for this purpose, depending on the required level of protection (corrosion protection classes) and the desired finish. Zinc Sprays, Galva Spray and Zinc-Alu Spray as well as Brushable Liquid Zinc Coating and Brushable Liquid Zinc Paint provide active cathodic corrosion protection. Products such as WEICON Rust Protection 2000 Plus serve as an excellent primer and an additional barrier layer before applying zinc sprays.
For applications where appearance matters as much as protection, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass or chrome-silver sprays are also available for decorative and visual surface finishing. This allows treated surfaces not only to be reliably protected, but also to be adapted both functionally and visually to suit the specific application.

Preventing corrosion
To prevent rust from developing in the first place, it is advisable to seal surfaces in advance with Zinc Spray or to protect them temporarily with a waxy corrosion protection. This is especially suitable for cavities. With specialised products such as our Isolation Spray, electronic components, circuit boards and PCBs can be protected from moisture – and therefore from corrosion – by means of a thin resin film.

FAQs about rust
What’s the best way to fight rust?
The best way to tackle rust is with a systematic approach: first, remove or neutralise the rust, then protect the surface, and finally apply suitable coatings or preservation treatments for long-term prevention.
Can rust simply be painted over?
Loose or active rust layers should not simply be painted over. For long-lasting adhesion and effective protection, the surface must first be thoroughly prepared and treated.
Rust remover vs. rust converter – what’s the difference?
Rust removers dissolve and remove rust from the surface. A rust converter, on the other hand, chemically transforms existing rust and prepares the surface for further treatment.
Liquid vs. gel rust remover – when to use each?
WEICON Rust Remover liquid is especially suitable for heavily corroded parts and applications in an immersion bath. WEICON Rust Remover Gel is ideal for vertical surfaces or areas where the product needs to adhere well, or where residual rust would be difficult to remove.
What helps to loosen seized screws or connections?
For seized screws, nuts or metal connections, WEICON Rust Loosener and WEICON Rust Shock are highly effective. They loosen corroded connections and restore their mobility with ease.
What’s the best way to protect metal after rust treatment?
After removing rust, the surface should be protected as soon as possible. Depending on your requirements, protective coatings, zinc sprays or other corrosion protection products are suitable for this purpose.
What’s the most effective way to prevent rust over time?
Rust can be significantly reduced through preventive preservation, suitable protective products and regular maintenance. Long-term corrosion protection is especially important in damp, harsh or very demanding environments such as coastal areas or industrial regions.
When are protective products no longer enough?
If metal surfaces are already severely damaged or corroded, protective products alone are not sufficient. In such cases, additional repair solutions, such as two-component epoxy resin systems, can provide an effective solution.
